If I could select any two wingers in the history of Rugby League, one of them would be Ken Irvine and the other would be this guy, Martin Offiah.
Offiah was a star that was so bright, he transcended the sport.
The fastest player I have ever seen, if Offiah got a hint of space, it was all over. He is one of those players that was so dangerous that the only defence against him was to make sure he didn't get the ball in the first place.
Offiah simply set the standard for modern day wingers. He was ahead of his time and if he was starting his career today, he would make Sonny Bill Williams look like a local park football hero.
Unlike many players today, knew how to work the crowd during a game and his flashy style would often see him waving at the opposition winger as he ran around them for an easy try.
The thing is, it wasn't just the flashy stuff that made him great. It was that he was such a compleye all round star.
he scored over 500 tries during his career in the UK alone. To put that in perspective, Ken Irvines record in first grade football in Australia, a record that many see as unreachable these days, is at 212 tries.
In 158 games for Wigan he scored 186 tries. In 33 games for Great Britain he scored 26 tries.
Simply put, Offiah is one of the top five players I have ever seen and probably the biggest star the game has produced in the last 25 years.
